Legislation
Over the past few years, there have been countless laws passed that are extremely harmful to LGBTQ+ people. This includes:
- banning transgender people from playing on sports teams of their gender
- banning the discussion of gender and sexuality in classrooms
- banning life-saving healthcare
- prohibiting cities from passing anti-discriminatory protection laws
- making the legal name-changing process more difficult
- barring access to use the appropriate restroom, and much more
These laws come from harmful misconceptions, such as:
- "transgender women have a clear advantage if they compete against cisgender women"
- "exposing young children to LGBTQ content will make them turn out LGBTQ"
- "kids are too young to know if they are LGBTQ"
- "LGBTQ people are sexual predators"
- "being LGBTQ is just a phase"
So, how can you help?
- If you are eligbile to vote, please do! Voting for politicians who support LGBTQ+ causes is crucial for our community's representation and increases the chances of protective laws. Please do your proper research before voting, though!
- Contacting your local politicians is a great way to bring to light an issue! You can send an email to ask about their stance on LGBTQ issues or propose one of your own ideas. If you live in the United States and don't know your representatives, click here to find out.
